Project Description

Shindico desired a showcase building that utilized state-of-the-art energy conservation technologies consisting of a 90% efficient heat recovery ventilator, integrated controls for building systems, lighting and security. In addition water to water heat pumps utilizing open circuit technology were employed to provide a high level of zone thermostatic control, variable frequency drives match the outside air quantity to the actual number of occupants for optimum indoor air quality without over ventilating, and space lighting levels are automatically dimmed when natural daylighting is available.

The Shindico building utilizes open loop geothermal heat pumps, ultra high efficiency heat recovery ventilation and fully integrated mechanical and electrical controls. On this project the building automation system controls all mechanical systems, natural daylight and lighting levels, both shading and blackout blinds, and building security cameras and alarms. The formal Consultant commissioning process optimized the interaction of the mechanical, daylight and lighting controls for optimum efficiency.

Sustainable development philosophies were achieved by close liaison between the Architectural, Interior Designer, Mechanical, Electrical disciplines and the Contractor. MCW was retained as the LEED Certified Professional to educate, organize, monitor and document the process.

This completed project exceeded the requirements of the Canadian Model National Energy Code by 49.44%; making it one of the most efficient buildings in Manitoba. The building was awarded status as a “Power Smart Designated Building” by Manitoba Hydro.

When Shindico interviewed MCW for this design-build project it was clear that innovation, energy efficiency and sustainable development were key desired features. MCW worked closely with Shindico and the results are ‘State-of-the-Art’ mechanical and electrical systems that not only are efficient and ‘green’ but also set a new standard in Manitoba for integrated design.
