Project Description

The modernization of Vimy Ridge Academy involved significant mechanical upgrades to a facility whose building systems were installed decades apart (original construction was in the 1950’s) and are still utilized today.

The modernization involved all major mechanical and electrical systems supporting the school infrastructure. New energy efficient equipment was installed with respect to HVAC and plumbing plus upgrades in power distribution, lighting and data/communication are also included. Concepts such as far away, condensing boilers, low flush fixtures, LED lighting and occupancy sensors have been integrated into the overall mechanical and electrical design.

The design team used a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach. The school remained operational throughout the modernization project. As a result, the modernization was carried out in phases. MCW Hemisphere  performed mechanical and electrical engineering.

Lighting Design

The upgrade of the electrical and lighting systems included an initial, room by room walk through of the site with the owner to inventory and audit the existing lighting and lighting controls. MCW then made a number of recommendations all of which were accepted.

The new lighting design included complete removal of all existing interior and exterior florescent and HID fixtures and lighting controls. These were replaced with 100% LED fixtures. Interior and Exterior controls were replaced with smart, low voltage controls which consisted of occupancy sensors, vacancy sensors, dimming, astronomical time clock and lighting sweeps.
