Project Description
Construction began on the original John Street Roundhouse in 1897. By 1918, it had the capacity to house 32 locomotives, accessible via its 90 foot turntable. An impressive structure, it has a diameter of close to 250 ft. from the centre of the turntable, including 136,000 sq.ft. of interior space. The John Street Roundhouse was occupied by Leon's until 2016 and now Steamwhistle Brewery and the Toronto Railway Historical Association Museum. While it has numerous unique architectural features, this Heritage Building presented several design challenges. The roof structure was not robust, all mechanical equipment was supported by mezzanines, which were anchored to the floor, completely independent of the roof structure. As well, services run along the existing catwalks.
MCW Consultants Ltd. undertook an extensive renovation and upgrading of all remaining untenanted spaces within the roundhouse's bays 15 to 32 - a total area of 47,000 ft2. Our scope included upgrading the base building's mechanical and electrical systems as well as a furniture store tenant fit-up designed to achieve LEED accreditation.
