City of Edmonton
Norwood Fire Hall #5
Project Description
The City of Edmonton Fire Hall #5 is currently pending LEED®Silver certification. This project included a rainwater recovery system for non-potable water usage. MCW Hemisphere participated both mechanically and electrically in the design of Fire Rescue Station #5.
The facility presented a number of design challenges which Hemisphere played a pivotal role in overcoming. Our client was concerned that running engines inside the apparatus bays presented ventilation and odor issues. Hemisphere’s solution was a tailpipe manifold exhaust system used to capture and remove the diesel fumes and carbon monoxide. Another client concern was the large amount of washroom exhaust generated.
Our solution was an air-to-air energy recovery ventilator used to recover energy from the exhaust air stream and precondition the make-up outside air. Our client was also concerned about high humidity areas. Hemisphere used special de-humidification modules in the wash down bay and equipment drying areas which generated excessive moisture that needed to be removed, to protect the building envelope and indoor environment. The client desired the ability to recover and store rainwater. Hemisphere's solution was for rainwater to be recovered from the building rooftop and stored in a large underground cistern. This water could then be treated, filtered and used for flushing of toilets, landscape irrigation and other non-potable water applications.
