True North Sports and Entertainment
MTS Centre
Project Description
Prominently located on Portage Avenue in downtown Winnipeg, this 15,000 seat, 130,000 sq.ft. arena is home to all major indoor sports and entertainment events in Winnipeg. The arena hosts the Winnipeg Jets hockey team, curling events, concerts, figure skating competitions, dirt events, shows and conferences, and more. Previously, the arena was the home of the Manitoba Moose hockey team. At the time of completion, this facility was the most modern on the continent, incorporating the best and latest features of the next generation of sports and entertainment complexes in North America. In addition to excellent sight lines and amenities, the building incorporates a 10 MW electrical service, 11,000 tons of cooling capacity, high performance smoke control and removal systems, state of the art life safety and building automation systems, microprocessor-based lighting controls, and more. Design development was provided by a US firm, with MCW completing detailed design, all contract documents and construction administration services. MCW’s mechanical and electrical engineering reinforced the distinctive architectural design that combines contemporary glass and steel design with a warm red brick exterior.
