Caenarvon School Addition & Modernization
Project Description
Caernarvon elementary school is an existing school in North Edmonton, originally built in 1975 (2275m2) with additions in 1976 (862m2) and 1992 (638m2) and currently accommodating approximately 500 students. In 2016 MCW Hemisphere undertook the electrical design for a complete facility modernization (2825m2), large addition (925m2), partial demolition (818m2) and a total rework of the site for a new parking lot, student drop off zone and building entrance. The school continued to operate with full staff and students throughout the project design and construction phases, with the project being completed in the fall of 2018.
Key elements in design included a new outdoor learning environment, consideration of 21st century learning principles and their implementation into an existing facility as well as a highly sustainable approach to the design as new stringent energy codes had just come into effect in Alberta. Electrical design implementation of 21st century principles consisted of flexible classroom layouts containing complete WI-FI coverage, low glare multi-level lighting and teacher voice amplification equipment. Sustainable design practices were taken up another level by utilizing ultra-high efficiency lighting, multi-level controls including dimming, occupancy and vacancy sensors and daylight harvesting.
