MCW CES Selected as Energy Engineering Partner for UCalgary’s Energy Efficiency and Heat Recovery Initiative

MCW Custom Energy Solutions (MCW CES) is proud to have been chosen as the energy engineering partner for the second phase of the University of Calgary’s Energy Efficiency and Heat Recovery Initiative. The initiative is an energy-efficiency and conservation project designed to help UCalgary make strides towards carbon-neutral campus operations through energy retrofits and Greenhouse Gas emissions reductions strategies in existing buildings.


The University of Calgary Energy Efficiency and Heat Recovery Initiative seeks to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions across the University’s Main and Foothills campuses through a combination of mechanical and electrical system retrofits, HVAC system retro-commissioning, and Building Automation System Controls upgrades in research, laboratory and teaching spaces. These strategies support the University’s 2019 Climate Action Plan GHG emissions reductions roadmap: a 35% reduction by 2025, 50% by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2050. This initiative is partially funded by the Government of Canada’s Low-Carbon Economy Fund with a contribution of $8.5M. The total program is anticipated to be $18M.

MCW CES was chosen from an inspiring mix of firms that responded to a public RFP issued in November 2019. Our team leverages both the energy engineering expertise of MCW CES as well as local consulting engineers from MCW Calgary. We’ll be involved throughout the life of the Energy Efficiency and Heat Recovery Initiative from initial energy analysis through to post-project energy performance monitoring, bringing to bear a range of services that includes energy engineering and analysis, stakeholder engagement, detailed M&E design engineering, commissioning, construction administration, and IPMVP-based measurement and verification services.


MCW CES will be working closely with UCalgary’s Dept. of Facilities project team, Clark Builders (the Construction Manager for the project), and Siemens Canada to ensure successful delivery of the initiative between 2020 and 2023.


Our work through the Energy Efficiency and Heat Recovery Initiative builds on a long history of engineering services and collaboration with the University of Calgary. Recent MCW work on the main campus focused on infrastructure upgrades for Kananaskis Hall, Rundle Hall and Education Tower.
